Using Pond Liner Tape
Using pond liner tape can be an easy way to fix a leak in your pond, but you have to make sure to do it right or you'll only find out that you wasted a day and still have a leaky pond!.
Before breaking out the pond liner tape, you want to locate the spot that is leaking. Some water loss is normal due to evaporation, so don't assume the decrease in water level is attributed to a leak. Turn off the pump and carefully monitor the water level. If it does continue to drop then you have a leak in the pond liner. First off, check the edges to make sure they are still where they are supposed to be and not the cause of the leak. If everything is right, then let the pond continue to leak until it stops - when it has stopped you will know that your leak is located slightly above the water level.
Hopefully it will not be on the bottom or you will need to remove your fish and plants to a safe place before all their water drains out!
Once the leak is located, you can attempt a repair with pond liner tape. First off, clean the area by scrubbing with an abrasive pad and gasoline. Wipe the area dry and be sure there is no debris or caked on dirt. If your leak is a small hole or tear, you can use the single sided tape and apply it over the hole. Use a small roller to make sure it is pressed down tightly and seal with lap sealant and let dry as per instructions before refilling the pond.
If the leak is too large, you may need to splice in another piece of liner. For this you will want the double sided pond liner tape. Clean both edges as stated above. Put the double sided tape on the top of one liner and then place the bottom of the other liner on top of the other side of the tape so that the edges of the two liners meet in the middle of the tape. Put your one sided tape along the length of the two liner edges so no edges are exposed. Use a roller to make sure it is all pressed down tightly and seal with lap sealant.
