Pond Covers - Which One Is Right For You?
Pond covers come in different prices, shapes and sizes depending on what you want to use them for.
There's covers to keep out the leaves, solar covers for winter and dome covers for weather protection that allow you to still go inside and look at the pond.
For heavy duty fish pond enthusiasts, there is a pond cover that is a big dome - like a tent that you place over the pond. It protects the pond from harsh winter weather, leaves and other debris. The material it is made of allows 90% of the light to reach your pond.
They are made from tear proof material that is resistant to mildew and are well ventilated with 4 flaps that can create a cross ventilation and they are water tight.
You can get big honking domes that you can walk right in or mini domes that fit right over your pond. The advantages are that you can set them up quickly (30 minutes or less) and they won't get weighted down and slip down into the pond.
Some pond covers are simply to keep leaves out of the pond and to keep fish in. They can be used during fall when leaves are falling down and when new fish are introduced to prevent the possibility of them jumping out. These are a simple netting that is stretched over the pond and staked down along the sides. They will also protect your fish and frogs against predators.
Solar pond covers are used to help your pond retain heat in the winter as well as keep out debris. This type of cover consists of a solar blanket that is rolled over the pond and cut to fit. The edges can be staked down but it floats on top of the pond and will not sink - even if it is covered in snow. I expect a snow covering would impede the warming function of the blanket so I guess you would want to clear off as much as you can.
