Planting Gardenias

Planting gardenias can be tricky but is well worth it for their beauty and fabulous fragrance.
This shrub with glossy green leaves can grow from 2 to 6 feet and can make a great border or even a privacy hedge. It produces white flowers that can be up to 4" wide and are known for their powerful fragrance. It blooms from May to July.

Gardenias don't like the cold so outdoor planting should be kept to warmer climates. Planting gardenias in light shade is recommended and make sure you have a well drained soil with plenty of organic matter added.

These plants like a slightly acidic soil that is moist and should be planted in fall or spring. If you want to make the most of the beautiful scent, plant them in a spot where a light breeze or crosswind might carry the scent about.

Feeding of the plants should be done in March and then again in late June. Be careful to stop feeding in summer so as not to encourage new growth that could be damaged by winter weather. New growth on gardenias don't like anything much below 15 degrees.

After planting gardenias there is quite a bit of maintenance involved in keeping your plants healthy. Feeding with an acid plant food should be done as specified above. Once they are done flowering, prune the bush to remove dead branches and flowers as well as shape. They must be watered regularly even when they are not in bloom. There are many insects and disease that like gardenias so you should periodically inspect the plant for any irregularities or unusual areas on the leaves such as tiny dots that look like cotton, a sooty looking substance, black fungus and aphids.
