Designing With Outdoor Furniture Cushions

Outdoor furniture cushions can give your outdoor area a new look as well as make it much more comfortable.
If you are looking for some sort of theme or matching color scheme, then your cushions can act as design elements to bring the look together.
When buying outdoor furniture cushions, you need to consider the practical as well as the aesthetic. Given that they will be used outdoors, you want something that will hold up to the elements. A heavy duty material that is water proof or at least water resistant is advisable as well as a quick drying foam inner.
Buying materials that are UV resistant can help your furniture to look good without fading and adding a stain resistant coating can help protect them from staining from birds or animals or even from casual outdoor dining and sunscreens!
Finding that perfect look in your outdoor furniture cushions can be a daunting task. I have found that there is not much choice in patterns and colors in my local stores. Unless you are lucky enough to live near a manufacturer that specializes in cushions, you may have better luck shopping online. Check out our section on buying lawn and garden furniture

If you really can't find what you want, you can always make your own! It really isn't that hard to make some simple cushions. Just buy a cushion already made and pick out some fabric that you would like to cover it in. Cut 2 pieces of fabric about 2 inches bigger than the cushion on all side (more if the cushion is thick). Place the fabric with right sides together, pin and sew 3 sides. Slip the cushion inside and sew up the open end.
Proper care of outdoor furniture cushions will make them last longer and look better. Periodically, remove them from the furniture and wash them with mild soap and water and make sure to rinse off all the soap. If you have areas with mildew, spray on a bleach and water solution, let sit for 30 minutes, then clean off with water. Always let your cushions dry thoroughly before storing them away for the season.
