You want to start applying fertilizer to your lawn in the spring as early as possible. Use of fertilizer that controls we eat which will help keep weed growth down in addition to giving the young grass shoots the nutrients they need to grow.

when the snow melts, check for areas where the blades of grass have clumped up and compressed from the snow packed on top. This can leave a strong light covering (thatch) down at the soil level and can interfere with iteration and water absorption.

Give aggressive good raking to pull up the thatched areas of loosened up the soil. If the ground is really tight and compact you might want to have some aeration done.
