Just having a few simple tools will make the job so much easier and you don't have to spend a fortune to get started.
One of my most important garden tools is gloves. Ok, so maybe this isn't a really a tool, but they make the gardening process a lot easier. I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty, in fact I like digging in the dirt but after hours of gardening, you will find that a good pair of gloves with a bit of rubber on the palms will help to avoid blisters and keep your hands from getting so dirty and banged up that you’ll wonder if your nails will ever look the same. Not to mention that there are a lot of creepy looking bugs in the dirt and I find it is best to avoid touching them if at all possible.

Second on my list of garden tools is a small hand held trowel. If you are digging up a large area, you will probably want a big spade too, but for planting and digging up plants that small handheld one is invaluable.
When it comes time to dig up weeds and rake over the soil, a handheld 3 pronged rake is a valuable garden tool. You can use it to aerate the soil as well. Of course if you have large areas of weeding, then a large rake you can use while standing is probably better, but this is great for working your way around the garden a bit at a time.
If you dedicate hours to gardening, your body will thank you when you use a kneeler or knee cushions. They even make a funky garden rocker seat that bends as you lean forward to garden. I haven't tried one of those yet but it looks like it could really help take the strain off your knees and legs. I often end up sitting with my legs underneath me and then when I try to get up I am sorry that I did!
Even if you have a small garden, a good set of pruners is a necessary garden tool. If you have larger shrubs and trees you will probably want a larger size pruner as well. These are necessary for keeping your garden looking well groomed and preventing wildly growing plants that aren't shaped the way you want.
