Backyard Garden And Patio :: Fish Pond Depth

What Fish Pond Depth Should You Have?

Figuring what fish pond depth is perfect for your backyard pond depends on what kinds of fish you want to keep.
Different kinds of fish will require different depths due to their size. In addition, your fish will grow to the size of your pond, so if you have a big and deep pond your fish will get to their maximum size. If you live in an area where the pond will freeze during winter, you want to make sure that it is deep enough so that the bottom is not frozen and the fish have somewhere to go so plan to go about 14" below the freeze line.

Your fish pond depth need not be consistent throughout the pond. If you are making the pond yourself and not using a preformed pond liner then you can create the pond with different depths. You should make sure that at least 40 percent of the pond is at the maximum depth.

If you plan to keep Koi, then your fish pond depth should be at least 3 feet. These fish do get rather large even if the pond size is small so you should really have quite a large pond - over 1000 gallons to successfully keep these beautiful fish. The bigger and deeper you can go the better for this type of pond. The more water there is per fish the less polluted it will become from the waste of each fish and the better chance for their survival. Of course you will need a good filtration system as well.

If you are only planning on keeping goldfish, then you should have a fish pond depth of 2 feet. Again, if the pond will freeze, then you need to make sure the deepest part is about 14" below the freeze line. Gold fish are a bit easier to keep in a pond but if you plan to eventually graduate to Koi, then you will need to make the pond large enough for them in the first place.

If you want to attract frogs, newts and birds to the pond, you should leave some shallow areas and gradually slope it to the deepest part. Just like a real pond! Put lots of plants and rocks for frogs and newts to hide under. The birds will like a really shallow spot that they can stand in and bathe - put something like sand or rocks on the bottom so it isn't slippery for them.
