How To Design a Garden Pond
To design a garden pond, you must first consider size and placement.
It is a good idea to draw out a plan on paper to see what it might look like. Visit garden centers and other homes or places where there might be established ponds so you can get an idea of what type or style you want.
Where
You may want to design your garden pond so that you can see it from your patio or house. On a day that is not so pleasant to be outside you can still enjoy it's beauty and peacefulness. Since your pond will require electricity, you might want to locate it near a power supply, or at least put some thought into how you will get the power out to it.
Consider what is in the ground over the area you have chosen - will it be easy to dig? Are there roots or other objects that could poke into your liner? Make sure there are no utility lines in the spot that you want to dig up! It is best to locate your pond in a spot that receives partial shade so as to keep down algae problems.
What
Once you have selected the spot, you need to design your garden pond around any size restrictions in that spot. If it is in your garden or near your patio, make sure the placement of the pond does not interfere with normal traffic. It might not be a bad idea to lay out a template roughly the size and shape of the pond and live around it for a few day to see how it impacts your daily life.
You can pick from a multitude of shapes, sizes and decorative designs, but you will probably want to design your garden pond to match your garden or backyard theme. A classical theme will want more of a minimalist style, while woodsy theme might want a more natural or real life looking style.
Why
Another consideration when you design a garden pond is why you want the pond. Is it simply a water feature? Will you be keeping fish in it? Plants? If you want to keep fish, then you need some additional considerations but if it is simply to look at the water you can make it as small or shallow as you want.
For keeping fish, you will want to dig your pond deep enough so that it will not completely freeze in winter and kill the fish. You will need pumps and filters to maintain water quality. You should also provide plants for the fish to hide in and around. The amount of fish you want to keep in the pond dictates the size. A pond can hold about 20" of fish per square meter - more if it is very well filtered and less if it is not well filtered.
How
You can do it yourself! It will require some planning and a time commitment, but you can do it and save a bundle.
