The first step in planting daffodil bulbs is to pick a spot! Daffodils like bright sun, so they grow best in an area that is sunny all day. Well drained soil will help too. These flowers look best when growing in a group, so make sure you have room to plant several bulbs for maximum effect.
Before planting your bulbs, mix the soil with compost or other organic matter. If you are planting a bunch of bulbs it is probably easier to dig a trench rather than individual holes, but either way, you want it to be about 5" deep (the general rule is to plant down about 3 times the height of the bulb). Daffodil bulbs should be placed 3" apart.
After you have dug the holes, mix some fertilizer specially for bulbs in with the dirt at the bottom of the hole. Put the daffodil bulb with the roots down and pointed side up. Cover with soil, pat and water thoroughly. Now you can enjoy the winter knowing that your daffodil bulbs will give you a bright display in the spring!
