Creative Garden Ponds
Creative garden ponds can add interest to your yard and be a focal point of your garden.
In order to have a free form pond, you will need to use a pond liner, but you can get creative even with preformed liner. Your unique signature can be in the shape of the pond, the placement or the accessories around it. No matter what you decide, your unique water feature will be a great place to relax for your whole family.
Creative garden ponds start with a unique idea - maybe you want an unusual shape like a kidney shape or a barbell shape with a bridge in the middle over the narrowest area. You can have waterfalls to add interest and create a wonderful sound.
Or maybe, your creativity will turn to the accessories in and around your pond. You can have a theme of perhaps turtle decorations, or frogs - maybe even a little statue in the center of the pond. Of course you can decorate the edges with natural looking rocks, plants and flowers.
Most creative garden ponds are home to either goldfish or Koi. If you plan on keeping Koi, then you will need to plan your pond accordingly - click here for some guidelines on how big your pond should be for certain fish. If you want birds to come and bathe then you will need to provide a shallow spot for them to stand in while they get wet and some shelter nearby. Frogs will probably find your pond on their own, but if you want them to be happy there you should provide some rocks, plants and other shelter for them.
Creative garden ponds can be a fun place to express yourself as well as relax on the weekends but they will require a bit of maintenance. If you are keeping fish, you will need a filter similar to a fish tank and that will require monthly cleanings. Similar to a fish tank, you should do monthly partial water changes to keep good water quality. Clearing the pond from a buildup of leaves and other objects is a must to keep it healthy and clear. You may want to cover your pond in winter as well to give your fish a better chance of survival.
