Some people are afraid to plant bulbs seeing it as a scaring and complicated process but it's really very easy and almost fool proof! You really have to screw up to have your bulbs not bloom, but there are some steps you can take to make sure you get the most out of your plantings. So relax and enjoy this easy part of gardening that will give you colorful flowers year after year.
On of the most important bulb planting tips is to simply read the package. This will give you instructions on when to plant and how deep to plant it. The larger the bulb the deeper you want to plant it, but you should follow what the instructions on the package say.
Also, keep the bulbs in the package as you are planting, otherwise you may not be able to tell which bulb is which!
Location, location, location. One reason that many flowers do not come up as expected is that they are not planted in a location where the flower will thrive, so blubl planting tip #2 goes back to the label - check it out for your specific type of bulb and plant accordingly. Most bulbs like a sunny area with good drainage.
Prepare the soil for your bulbs so that it is loose - you may want to add some organic matter like compost but no fertilizer is needed as the bulbs have their own nutrients right in the bulb. Furthermore, the roots can become damaged if they are in contact with the fertilizer.
One of the most common asked about bulb planting tips is how deep to plant the bulb. Again, the package should tell you, but you will need to dig down at least 5 - 8" or more if you are using big bulbs. Typically you want to plant it down about 3 times the height of the bulb and set it in the hole with the pointy end up. If you can’t figure out which end is the pointy one, don’t sweat it, the flower will usually find it's way up through the ground even if you put the bulb in upside down.
