Vegetable Gardening Tips

Vegetable Gardening in your own backyard can be fun as well as economical. Nothing tastes better than a fresh homegrown tomato or juicy cucumber from your own garden. Not only are these vegetables better for you since they don't contain toxic pesticides they are also cheaper!

When planning your vegetable garden you want to think about varieties you can plant for early season midseason and late-season. This way you'll have vegetables that you can harvest all season long. Be sure to find a sunny spot in your yard for your vegetable garden location. You'll want to prepare the soil so that it is perfect for growing vegetables and you probably need to rent a killer and maybe mix in some compost to guarantee a good crop.

Vegetable gardens need a lot of sun and most vegetables need at least six hours a day some need at least eight. You want to plant vegetables and rows but quick growing veggies such as radishes and lettuce can be planted in between the rows of longer growing vegetables like corn and beets. This way you can maximize your garden space.

Make sure your vegetable garden gets plenty of water especially during those drive months in the summer. Most vegetables needed inch or more of water each week but sometimes it is best to make sure they just get a bunch of water every day. This is particularly important when the vegetables are fruiting.

You'll want to watch your garden for pests. Garden pests can rip through your vegetables and eat them up before you get a chance to put them on the table! The earlier you notice a problem with bugs the easier it will be to treat. Be careful what pesticides you use on vegetables especially if you want to have an organic garden. Chemical pesticides can be toxic and you wouldn't want to have them on your vegetables because then you will ingest them when you eat the vegetables. It's best to use organic methods of pest control if you can.

In addition to pests you want to protect your vegetable garden from animals looking for a free meal. Put a fence around the vegetable garden that will keep out rabbits dogs and cats. Rabbits and deer can heat up a garden in no time at all so the cost of offense will be well worth your while. You can also use the fence as a structure to hold up crops like tomatoes peas and beans which need support.

Growing your vegetable garden can be a great way to put delicious and healthy food on the table for your family as well as a great way to get you outside to enjoy the beautiful summer days. Once you have enjoyed your vegetables don't forget to put the waste into your compost pile so you can recycle it and use it as fertilizer next spring. At the end of the growing season prepare your garden for the next year so that you can enjoy vegetables during the next growing season.
