Growing Your Indoor Garden
If you love to garden, then don’t forget to add some plants indoors as well as out.
Plants look great in the home and add a dimension to any room but in addition to the aesthetic value plants provide there are also health benefits. Indoor plants can help to cleanse your air by exchanging gasses so it’s good for you to have plants in the house!
Here is some tips on how to care for plants indoors.
Potting
Choose a good quality container and one that will look attractive in the room. Make sure it has god drainage and don‘t forget to buy a saucer that matches to catch any overflow. Before planting, be sure that the pot is clean as this will help prevent infection and encourage healthy growth.
Fertilizing
Not all plants are alike so the amount and type of fertilization depends on the plant. If your indoor garden has the right amount of water, light, and humidity then you may not need to worry about fertilizing too much. You can buy a good indoor fertilizer from most home depot or hardware stores. Some plants like Orchids need a special fertilizer so be sure that you are aware of the needs of your plant before buying any fertilizer.
Lighting
Good lighting is important to your indoor plants. You can provide this with the natural lighting in the room or by plant lights. Darker leaved plants typically don't need as much light as others.
Some plants are better suited for indoor gardens such as Boston ferns, philodendrons, African violets, cyclamens and creeping fig.
Watering
A common mistake that many people make with their indoor garden is over watering the plants. This can lead to rotting roots. Every plant type requires different amounts of water so make sure to research the type of plants you have in your indoor garden.
Humidity
Humidity is one of the biggest problems with indoor gardens. The amount of moisture present in the air has a great effect on the growth of the plants. During mornings, try spraying the plants with water so they can get the needed moisture. Making sure the leaves don't get covered in dust is also important for good plant growth.
